WE ARE ALL RIVER WARRIORS

Image
WE ALL CAN DO OUR BIT TO SAVE YAMUNA To remove the harmful foam and other chemical pollutants from Yamuna we can be warriors too! It's not just the government's responsibility but our responsibility too.  (Source:  https://swachhindia.ndtv.com/delhis-waste-responsible-killing-aquatic-life-yamuna-river-2095/ ) I conducted interviews on Google Forms to ask people what things we use at home that can cause pollution. Most people said that detergents, soaps and dishwashing liquids at home. Also, paints, oils, insectisides, materials used for puja, and medicines that are thrown away contribute to river pollution. Detergents specially contribute to foam in rivers. What can we do? These are some suggestions provided by the interviewees: We should use phosphate-free detergents or eco-friendly, organic detergents . We should not pour oils, paints, insectisides and old medicines in the drain. They should be discarded in the garbage.  We should not use or throw away plastic bags and ...

TOXIC VEGETABLES FROM YAMUNA FLOODPLAINS!

HELP! THE FOAM AFFECTS US AT HOME TOO!  If you think you're safe from the toxic foam at home, think again, you are not. You are eating the toxic vegetables and fruits grown on the Yamuna flood plains, irrigated with the polluted river water. This land has high levels of toxic metals like nickel, lead, mercury that can cause cancer . These metals can get stored inside the growing vegetables.  It is most important that we should not just wash our vegetables but also soak them in baking soda for 10-15 mins to remove all chemicals from the surface of the vegetables. Unfortunately we cannot do anything about the metals in these vegetables so it is best to buy and eat organic vegetables. " Vegetable farming on the floodplains of the Yamuna continues unabated despite a ban by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in 2015. In 2015, the NGT had directed that no authority shall permit and no person shall carry out any edible crops or fodder cultivation on the floodplain till Yamuna is made...

SAVE THE YAMUNA FROM DISASTROUS FOAM!

TOXIC FOAM IS CLOUDING YAMUNA Did you know that foam is seen on the river Yamuna in Delhi? It's even pink or purple at times. Do you think it would look pretty or interesting with the foam? No. The foam just shows that the 22 km stretch of Yamuna flowing through Delhi is without any aquatic life. This foam is formed through industrial pollution, air pollution and household wastewater.       (Source:  https://www.ndtv.com/delhi-news/pink-foam-flowing-in-the-yamuna-is-toxic-industrial-waste-1290859 ) In a survey done by me on Google Forms everyone living in Delhi knew about the foam. This shows that foam has been in the river for very long time. Everyday when I go to school I cross a bridge over the Yamuna river. One side of it is clean but the other side is  filled with foam. I always thought this foam was  made by people who washed their clothes in the river. Now I know it is because of the pollution.                ...
